In "Delft – Oude Jan (In Passing)", the viewer is drawn directly into the flow of the canal, positioned at water level alongside a passing boat. The composition unfolds as a lived moment — fluid, immediate, and quietly immersive.

The tower of the Oude Kerk rises in the background, a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal movement of water. It anchors the scene in history, while everyday life drifts across the surface: figures in motion, trees filtering light, and reflections dissolving architecture into shifting patterns of colour.

In the foreground, flowers press vividly into the composition. Their presence disrupts traditional perspective, collapsing distance and pulling the viewer into the immediacy of the scene. They remind us that vision is never neutral — it is shaped by proximity, by season, and by the sensory richness of the present moment.

Thelen-van den Hoek's practice is rooted in the transformation of ideas into visual form, where painting becomes a way of examining perception itself. In this work, she constructs a space in which the viewer experiences the scene from within rather than from a distance.

Delft is no longer an image to contemplate, but an experience to inhabit — unfolding in time, movement, and perception.
