In "Delft - Voldersgracht (Distance)", Alexa Thelen-van den Hoek draws on the familiar, almost iconic imagery of the city — a canal bordered by brick façades, an arching bridge, and summer light shimmering across the water. The scene feels instantly recognisable, evoking the visual language of postcards and collective memory.
Yet this sense of idyll is subtly interrupted. A white railing in the foreground establishes a quiet but decisive separation between viewer and motif. Rather than entering the scene, we remain positioned outside it. The railing becomes a threshold — marking the boundary between participation and observation, between lived experience and curated image.
The composition carefully orchestrates depth and perspective, guiding the gaze inward while simultaneously holding it at a distance. This tension transforms the painting into a reflection on perception itself: how places are framed, how they become images, and how those images, in turn, shape our understanding of reality.
Working within a conceptual and process-driven practice, Thelen-van den Hoek approaches painting as a dialogue between thought and perception. Her works do not simply depict a place, but examine the conditions through which it is seen.
Delft appears here not only as a picturesque city, but as a constructed vision — mediated, composed, and consciously observed.
